Ethical AI in Development (EAID)

Rethinking the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Global Development

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in global development; from data collection and humanitarian response to grant making and public health. But AI is not neutral. It is shaped by the same systems of power, bias, and inequality that underpin the development sector itself.

At LPFDev, we’re asking critical questions:

  • Who designs these tools?

  • Whose data is used?

  • Whose values are embedded in the algorithms?

  • Who is left out, and what are the consequences?

Our AI in Development initiative seeks to expose the risks of technocratic solutions that replicate colonial logic — and to build pathways for more ethical, accountable, and community-led uses of technology in the sector.

What We're Concerned About

AI tools, when applied uncritically, can:

  • Reinforce bias through data sourced from historically marginalised or misrepresented communities

  • Automate inequality in decision-making processes, funding allocation, and program targeting

  • Silence community voice, replacing lived experience with external “intelligence”

  • Extend digital colonialism, where tech solutions from the Global North are imposed on the Global South

We invite participation from:

  • Civil society and grassroots organisations

  • Technologists, data practitioners, and AI researchers

  • Donors and INGOs using or investing in digital tools

  • Activists and community organisers advocating for tech justice

  • Anyone questioning how we build a just digital future
